beginner series: three common beauty mistakes to avoid

We have all done it. Made beauty mistakes, that is. When it comes to makeup application, no one is perfect their first time out…or second…. or even the third. It takes time to learn what works and what doesn’t. For some, this learning curve can be frustrating. Don’t give up! Everyone falls into issues, problems, and complications at one point or another. The most important thing is to learn from them and improve your skill level.

When I first started wearing makeup, I looked like a glorified racoon. Despite my mother’s raised eyebrow and the strange looks I got on the street – it took me a while to understand why a pile of black makeup wasn’t flattering. Want to avoid these types of problems moving forward? It is time to learn how to avoid three of the most common beauty mistakes beginners make.

Common Beauty Mistake: Wearing The Wrong Foundation Shade

Finding the perfect match for your skin colour is no easy feat. There are rows and rows of foundation shades to choose from. It can be hard to tell which one is best. Some oxidize on the skin differently than others and some simply look different inside the bottle. It is no wonder so many of us walk around wearing the wrong foundation.

How can you tell if it’s wrong? Take a look. Is your neck a totally different colour than your face? Wrong foundation shade. Foundation is meant to even out your skin tone, cover up redness, dark circles, and spots….. not alter the colour of your skin. To choose the right shade, you can either head to the beauty counter and get matched or use testers at the drugstore. Rather than testing them on your hand (which is typically a shade or two darker than the skin on your face), apply a small amount to your neck, walk around the store for a bit, then come back.

Common Beauty Mistake: Overdoing The Blush

There is nothing quite like blush. The right shade can add a beautiful flush of colour to your face and even work to sculpt your cheekbones. Unfortunately, there is such a thing as too much of a good thing. Many of us tend to layer on too much blush. (Myself included.) That can make your makeup look too dramatic or overwhelming, especially in natural light. This is true whether you are using a neutral toned blush or a bright and bold pink. It is always possible to overdo it.

The solution is to apply your blush carefully. It is always easier to add more than it is to take it away. So, lightly dab your brush into the product, tab off any excess, and then apply it to your cheeks. Another tip to remember? Blend. The more you blend your blush, the more natural it will look. If you have accidentally applied too much, grab a clean blush brush and blend the product out.

Common Beauty Mistake: Leaving Your Makeup On Overnight

It doesn’t sound that serious. Falling asleep with your makeup on happens to even the most experienced makeup lovers. Unfortunately, this is one easy way to affect the look and feel of your skin. Makeup can clog your pores, which can lead to pimples, fine lines, and wrinkles. Not to mention the fact that your eye makeup can seriously irritate your eyes if left on overnight.

Thankfully, this is one common beauty mistake you can solve with ease. Keep makeup removing wipes on your night table for the evenings that you feel absolutely exhausted. Otherwise, spend a few extra minutes to remove any and all makeup from your face. Your skin will look better in no time.

Speaking of makeup! Once you pass the beginner stage...you might find that you are adding more and more products to your collection. Over time that can lead to a super cluttered vanity. Which is why I decided to do a massive makeup declutter over on my YouTube channel. Take a look!

Makeup mistakes are a part of life. The whole point is to learn from them and improve your habits and skills. Now that you know how to leave some of the most common beauty mistakes in the past….your beauty routine will be better than ever.

Have you made any of these mistakes?
